What you surrender at the closing door will determine how free you will be as you cross the threshold of the open door.

There will be doors that are opened and doors that are closed in our lives… For literally the rest of our lives. The beauty of free will is the realization that we have been invited into an opportunity by Jesus to trust Him with those doors or to take matters into our own hands. The choice is ours.

2018 has been the year of the open door. I ran so fast out of the worst year of my life and into the open door of possibility that I almost forgot to slow down and ask Abba what exactly had to remain behind the closing door… For good. That conversation is never fun. When you ask, you must be ready for the answer. And I was…

You see, when you come through transition and the wilderness season, what you began with is definitely not what you end with. That’s what transition is all about. It’s a time of testing, tribulation and a tearing away from. It is a time of necessary crushing of your will so that ultimately your promotion won’t crush you… And consequently, what you surrender at the closing door will determine how free you will be as you cross the threshold of the open door.

The tempter knows well how broken your heart is. It matters not how spiritual you consider yourself to be, how in tune with His voice you are, or how determined you are to advance…closing doors hurt. They are loud as they slam. They are intended to be final. The turning of the lock and the throwing away of the key reminds us of this fact. And if we are honest, the explosive slamming, and deafening silence of the shut and locked door is terrifying. In this moment, we have a choice. An agonizing choice. This choice, right or wrong will set in motion the direction that your life will take. Direction, not intention determines destination.

I believe the most powerful test of your willingness to submit comes when loneliness makes a calculated move to bait you into regret. Regret for closing the door because just what if something changed… Or how about when the fear of the unknown that’s on the other side of the open door bullies you into grabbing the doorknob and every fiber of your being wants to run back as fast as you can to the familiar, because at least you knew how to fight that fight. Loneliness, regret and fear are famous foes that famously raise themselves against the knowledge of God in our lives. They must be cast down, rejected and eventually rooted out altogether if we even hope to succeed on the new journey that is before us.

I hear the Lord say, “For surely my Grace is sufficient for you. It always will be. When the taunting and antagonistic voice of the enemy threatens to convince you to look longingly behind you, you must resist!!! The grace that you need to overcome this temptation is readily available to you. Submerge yourselves in this unlimited grace that I am offering… It will give you the ability to not only resist but to fully REPENT and change direction to a forward progress. I only close doors when they leave openings for you to return to what has been assigned to kill you. The open door is escape… Swiftly approach its promise and never, ever look back again.”
