INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — It was a sell-out crowd again this year for the 15th annual Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast, which drew nearly 2,000 people to Riverside Park Thursday for a morning of prayer, inspirational music and reflection.
“This is such a remarkable turnout,” said event organizer John Bona, who founded the breakfast in 2005. “There are so many people here who do such good things for our community.”
Bona said so many different churches and religious denominations were represented at the prayer breakfast that it was impossible to name them all. He likened the prayer breakfast to Jesus meeting with his disciples along the shores of Galilee to confirm his resurrection.
“Many are here to embrace Christ,” said Bona. “They believe in him and have been given the right to be God’s children.”
He also acknowledged that many attendees had come to hear from author and Messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn, whose book “The Paradigm” discusses the idea that an ancient master blueprint in the Bible actually foretold the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States.
“When I hear Jonathan speak and write about this gracious offer our God has given us, I really have to wonder if Christians in America are going to ignore the word of God,” said Bona. “There are so many distinctive prophecies that have been predicted and fulfilled.”
One of those prophecies that Cahn writes about is Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton was part of this master blueprint.
He compares former President Bill Clinton to King Ahab in the Old Testament and Hillary Clinton to Ahab’s wife Jezebel, who would be defeated by Jehu. In the scripture, Jehu is described as not a political person and someone who is unpredictable, which Cahn said could also be used to describe Donald Trump.
Cahn's Messianism has been condemned by Jewish clergy and leaders as a cloak for Christian missionizing, according to the Jewish Standard, a publication in New Jersey that serves the Jewish community.
“This message is not going to be politically correct,” said Cahn. “But this is a prophetic message adapted here for a high and holy purpose. These are critical prophetic times that we are in right now. The wings of God are stronger than the world and stronger than history. They can change the course of history and that is why we are here.”
Cahn had the crowd enthralled with his messages of a revival of Christianity in America. Many stood on their feet with arms extended during his 45-minute address.
“There is a sense of something happening right here in Vero Beach,” said Cahn. “Let it be here, let it be now.”
Guy Penrod, the former lead singer of the Gaither Vocal Band, provided the morning’s inspirational music that also drew the crowd to its feet several times. His renditions of “You Reign” and “Revelation Song” were well-received by attendees, who sang along with Penrod as he walked through the audience.
Other speakers included Pastor Rob Shepitka from Light of the World Christian Church, Jon Hamilton, president of Christian FM Media Group and Wayne Smith, head of the Master’s Academy in Vero Beach.
Lisa Addeo from Palm City was attending the Prayer Breakfast for the first time and said she found the event to be inspirational. She purchased tickets after she learned Jonathan Cahn was delivering the keynote address and said he was someone she admires.
“I think he is just dynamic,” said Addeo, who watches Cahn on YouTube and has read his books about the prophecies. “He is bringing Christ into world matters and helping people understand that without God, we are lost.”
